There is a sawdust box that is loaded with sawdust, a little bit of charring using an electric starter (included) will start the smoker. Then the sawdust box is placed into the lower section, there is copper tubing that redirects a small steady stream of air from the heater/blower to blow on and continue the smoldering/smoking process... the smoke then moves its way upwards into the smoking chamber. Hope this helps Dave.
