Food Dehydrators at Home

Food Dehydrators Although most people are probably familiar with dried foods, they may not know much about the process behind the treats. Food dehydrators use warm air in order to remove the water content in certain foods. This process is considered to be a form of food preservation. It is usually performed on perishable foods with short shelf lives. By removing the water, decay is delayed. This is because micro-organisms that would usually spoil the food need water to survive. When the water is removed, the bad bacteria die or cannot enter.

The following are the most common items used in dehydrators:

  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Herbs
  • Bulbs
  • Chilies
  • Meat and Fish
  • Flowers

One of the most popular dehydrated foods though is jerky. Homemade jerky is an especially loved dried food provided the proper materials are used.

Homemade Jerky Process

Jerky has been a favorite snack for a long time. The process is definitely not new, but many individuals are finding new interest in it. Homemade jerky is becoming increasingly popular thanks to convenient in-house machines. Many people who have enjoyed jerky for years, now like being able to choose their own meats and spices for the process. Although beef is the most popular option, individuals have also begun using venison, elk, caribou, moose, turkey, ostrich, salmon, alligator and tuna. Using simple food dehydrators, anyone can become a jerky making expert.
